Stain protection

Protector is what makes the next spill a paper-towel job instead of a phone call

New carpet comes from the mill with a stain-resistant finish that wears off in the traffic lanes within a couple of years and is stripped further by every cleaning. Reapplying it after a clean puts that finish back, so coffee beads up, mud vacuums off and the next cleaning gets more out. It is the one add-on we recommend without hesitation for a house with kids or pets.

The carpet in most Clarksville homes is nylon or polyester cut pile that left the mill with a fluorochemical protector on the fibre, the thing that made spills bead up for the first year or two. It wears away in the traffic lanes, it is dulled by soil, and hot-water extraction, which is the right way to clean carpet, removes more of it each time. After a few years and a couple of cleanings the carpet has no protection left, which is why a glass of red drink on a five-year-old carpet goes straight in and a glass on a new carpet sits on top.

Reapplying protector is a quick step at the end of a clean. The carpet is cleaned and extracted, the protector is sprayed evenly across the fibre with a pump sprayer, raked in so it coats the pile rather than sitting on top, and allowed to dry with the carpet. Once cured it does three things: liquid spills bead on the surface long enough to blot them, dry soil releases more easily to the vacuum because it is not bonding to the fibre, and the next cleaning works better because soil has stayed near the surface. It does not make carpet stain-proof, it does not stop a spill that is left overnight, and it does not fix existing stains; it buys time and makes maintenance easier.

Where it earns its cost is a house with pets, toddlers, a coffee habit or red-mud boots, a rental where the tenant's deposit depends on the carpet, light-coloured carpet in a dining area, and upholstery, where it is applied the same way to a sofa or dining chairs after cleaning. It is applied to carpet, rugs and fabric furniture; it is not used on wool rugs without a wool-safe product, and the look-over will say which product suits what you have.

What the visit includes

Applied after cleaning

Protector only works on clean fibre, so it is the last step of an extraction or low-moisture clean.

Sprayed and raked in

Even coverage from a pump sprayer, raked into the pile so the fibre is coated rather than the surface.

Traffic lanes and dining areas

The places that lose their factory finish first get full coverage.

Upholstery and rugs too

Sofas, chairs and synthetic rugs treated with the appropriate product after cleaning.

Honest limits

Beads spills for blotting and releases dry soil; does not stain-proof carpet or fix existing stains.

Reapplied with each deep clean

Extraction removes protector, so it is renewed when the carpet is next cleaned.

Questions about stain protection

Does protector make carpet stain-proof?

No. It makes spills bead long enough to blot and keeps dry soil from bonding to the fibre. A spill left overnight will still stain.

How long does it last?

Until the next hot-water extraction removes it, typically a year or two in traffic lanes and longer in low-traffic rooms, which is why it is renewed with each deep clean.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Yes, once dry, which is a few hours. The products are the same class the mills apply at the factory.

Will it change how the carpet feels?

No. Applied and raked in properly it is invisible and the carpet feels the same.

Can you apply it to a sofa?

Yes, after cleaning, with a product suited to the fabric code; it is particularly worth it on light fabric sectionals in homes with pets.

Is it worth the money?

In a house with pets, children or light carpet, yes, every time. In an adults-only house with dark carpet and no traffic lanes, you can skip it, and we will say so.
