Ripples in a twenty-year-old hallway are a repair, not a reason to replace the carpet
Most Clarksville carpet went in with a knee kicker on a builder's schedule, and twenty years of humidity, furniture and foot traffic have let it loosen into waves. A power stretcher pulls it tight again in an afternoon, for far less than new carpet, and we patch the burns, the pet-chewed corner and the seam that has let go while we are there.
Carpet is held in place by tack strips around the edge of the room and by its own tension across the floor. When it was installed with a knee kicker alone, which is how a lot of production housing from the 1990s and 2000s was done, it was never stretched tight enough to begin with. Add Clarksville's humidity, which relaxes the backing, a sofa dragged across the room, and twenty years of traffic, and the carpet grows: it lifts into ripples along a hallway, waves in front of the sofa and a bubble in the middle of a bedroom. Left alone, the ridges wear through, people trip, and the carpet that could have been fixed becomes carpet that has to be replaced.
Power stretching is the fix, and it is a different tool from the one the installer used. The carpet is released from the tack strip along one or two walls, a power stretcher braces against the opposite wall and pulls the whole width of the carpet tight, the excess is trimmed and the edge re-hooked onto the strip. Most rooms take an hour or two, the furniture is moved and replaced, and the carpet lies flat again. We re-set tack strip that has rusted or pulled loose, replace the metal transitions at doorways, and tuck edges that have lifted at the baseboard.
Repairs are the other half. A cigarette or iron burn, a bleach spot, a patch the puppy chewed or a snag that pulled a run can be cut out and replaced with a plug from a closet floor or a leftover offcut, bonded to the backing so the patch is hard to find. Seams that have separated or peaked are re-bonded with seam tape and a seaming iron. Where the pad has failed under a doorway or a hall we replace that section. What we do not do is lay new carpet or replace carpet and pad room by room; when a carpet is worn through, delaminated or beyond stretching, we say so and leave the replacement to a flooring installer. The clean, repair or replace guide helps you make that call before you spend on either.
What the visit includes
Power stretched, not kicked
The whole width of the carpet pulled tight with a power stretcher braced against the far wall, then trimmed and re-hooked.
Tack strip and transitions
Rusted or loose strip replaced, metal and wood transitions at doorways re-set, lifted edges tucked.
Patches from offcuts
Burns, bleach spots, chewed corners and snags cut out and plugged from a closet or a leftover piece, bonded to the backing.
Seams re-bonded
Separated or peaking seams repaired with seam tape and a seaming iron.
Pad sections replaced
Failed pad under doorways and halls cut out and replaced before the carpet is re-stretched.
Honest about replacement
Worn-through, delaminated or badly damaged carpet is pointed to a flooring installer rather than patched for a fee.

Questions about carpet stretching and repair
Can rippled carpet really be fixed?
Nearly always, if the backing is sound. Power stretching removes the excess and re-tensions the carpet; it is a one-visit job and costs a fraction of replacement.
Why did my carpet ripple in the first place?
Usually a knee-kicker-only installation that was never tight, relaxed further by humidity and by furniture being dragged. Stretching with the proper tool fixes the original shortcut.
Do I need an offcut for a patch?
It helps, and most homes have one in a closet or the garage. If not, we take a plug from inside a closet floor where it will never be seen.
Will the patch be invisible?
Close to it on a solid-colour cut pile, especially after the whole room is cleaned so the patch and the carpet match. Patterned or heavily worn carpet shows the patch more, and we say so.
Should I stretch before or after cleaning?
Before. Cleaning a rippled carpet leaves the ripples; stretching first and cleaning after leaves a flat, clean floor and the two are often done on the same visit.
Do you install new carpet?
No. When a carpet is past repair we say so and leave the replacement to a flooring installer.
